Top 10 Reasons People REGRET Moving to Florida

    Back to Blog

After living in Florida since 2006, I've seen plenty of people move to our state and things don't always go as planned. If you're considering a move to Florida, here are the top 10 reasons why people regret making that decision.

#1: High Humidity & Extreme Heat

While the average high in July and August is 82.6°F, Southwest Florida summers are generally in the mid-90s with high humidity. Afternoon thunderstorms provide temporary relief but don't help with the humidity. If you're opposed to extreme heat and humidity, Florida's summer months might not be for you.

    #2: Extreme Weather & Hurricanes

Hurricane season runs from June 1st through November, a significant period of threat. While you generally have a week or two to prepare, the anxiety of hurricane season is a constant. Florida experiences this natural phenomenon that impacts real estate prices, insurance, and peace of mind.

    #3: Critters Everywhere

Florida hosts almost every type of critter imaginable, mosquitoes, no-see-ums (biting bugs near beaches), alligators, exotic pythons in the Everglades, wild boars, bears, and more. While most people aren't in areas with the most dangerous wildlife, and counties do spray for mosquitoes, the abundance of creatures can surprise newcomers.

    #4: Lack of Seasons

Florida doesn't have a typical fall with beautiful golden leaves or a winter with snow. We don't experience spring like Northern states do. Many Florida residents travel elsewhere to experience seasonal changes, to New England to see leaves change or Colorado to go skiing. If you enjoy variety in seasons, Florida may not satisfy that need.

    #5: Population Growth & Congestion

Florida has almost 22 million residents and is the fastest-growing state, with a 2% population increase from 2021-2022. However, infrastructure hasn't developed as much as needed for this growth. Many parts of Florida experience heavy traffic, packed beaches, and overcrowding. If you prefer solitude, this might be an issue.

    #6: High Insurance Costs

The average homeowners insurance policy in Florida is $4,200 per year, up 42% over last year. Insurance companies have paid out over $52 billion in recent years due to litigation over claims. Newer construction homes and properties not in flood zones have more favorable insurance rates, but overall costs remain elevated.

    #7: High Cost of Living

While Florida ranks 31st out of 50 for affordability (meaning 19 states are less affordable), coastal and beach properties command premium prices. Interior Florida offers better affordability, but if you're drawn to the coasts, expect higher costs of living than the state average.

    #8: Lack of Public Transportation

Unlike cities with robust metro and subway systems, Florida lacks comprehensive public transportation. While the East Coast has Bright Line train and some public busing exists, it won't reliably get you where you need to go. You essentially must have a car in Florida, and Uber is expensive. This is a major adjustment for people coming from transit-friendly cities.

    #9: Boring Terrain

Florida is flat. We don't have mountains, significant elevation changes, or dramatic undulation. For people who love hiking, mountain biking, or simply enjoying varied landscapes, Florida's sandy, flat terrain can be monotonous.

#10: Distance from Family (The #1 Regret)

The primary reason people regret moving to Florida is distance from relatives and loved ones. People arrive excited, get visits initially, return for holidays, but eventually want to be closer to family. Whether it's missing grandkids' sports or family events, being far from loved ones affects every age bracket.

If you're considering moving to Florida, create a plan to see family regularly, at least 2-3 times per year. Schedule visits and get family commitments. Don't be homesick in a new state.
